Delta Air Lines Still Recovering From Power Outage
“It’s really frustrating”, said Tatjana Drachenberg, a traveler from Germany whose flight to Atlanta was delayed five hours, causing her to miss her connecting flight to Charleston, S.C. She arrived Monday evening at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and “pretty much slept on the floor, got hardly any sleep”.

USA-based Delta Air Lines targeted “near-normal” operations late Wednesday as it attempted to recover from a Monday power outage that disrupted the company’s global flight schedule, grounding planes wherever they were at the time. As of 7 p.m. EST that night, Delta said it had operated 3,340 of its almost 6,000 scheduled flights for the day.
There is “nothing endemic” in the meltdown that started at the airline’s Atlanta headquarters Monday morning “to make us believe we’re at risk”, Ed Bastian said in an interview.
The carrier, among the world’s three largest airlines by most metrics, added Wednesday that it was continuing to provide passenger lodging and outage-related vouchers for affected travelers. Delta still has not given a cause for the outage.
The company said when flight crews can not carry out their responsibilities in a rotation, the rotations become invalid.
Since Monday Delta has cancelled over 1,700 flights.
Passengers flying with US carrier Delta Airlines experienced widespread delays and flight cancellations this week after a computer outage wiped out the company’s systems for several hours.
The updated policy now applies to all Delta flights with impacted travel dates August 8 – 10.
Flights were canceled Tuesday “to reset the operation and get crews, aircraft and other operational elements in place to take care of customers”, according to a statement on Delta’s website. Others were put up in hotels by Delta, including 2,300 in Atlanta alone Tuesday night.
Q: You posted an apology video Tuesday saying this isn’t Delta and the quality of service that passengers expect. Radixx’s data center has backup power provided by three jet engines, Peri said. Delta also said it was extending its waiver of flight change fees through Tuesday and was offering $200 in travel vouchers, in addition to rescheduled flights, to inconvenienced customers.
Airlines depend on huge, overlapping and complicated systems to operate flights, ticketing, boarding, airport kiosks, websites and mobile phone apps.
