Delta anticipates return to “normal operation” by Wednesday afternoon

“A lot of airlines have been struggling with legacy systems that they are not able to shut down – decommission to move through their life cycle – because they have a 24/7 operation”, Jaggers said.

Flights were canceled Tuesday “to reset the operation and get crews, aircraft and other operational elements in place to take care of customers”, according to a statement on Delta’s website.

Davies-Mandel said she appreciated Delta’s outreach on social media and messages from management, but she added “when you get on the phone and you deal with their customer service, that’s a whole different experience”, noting two calls took her four and a half hours. By early afternoon, Delta said it had canceled about 530 flights as i. Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter said that there has been no indication that the service outage was the result of a hack.

But nobody has attached as much importance to never canceling flights as Delta. Hopes of getting on a plane were raised and dashed overnight.

“Some of the men were yelling”, she said. When the outage first hit, the airline grounded more than 1,000 flights and delayed another 3,000.

Approximately 1,925 Delta flights were canceled over the three-day period.

Delta is also giving $200 in travel vouchers to those whose flights are canceled or whose flights are delayed more than three hours.

Customers traveling Wednesday should check the status of their flight at delta.com or the Fly Delta App. Customers can rebook their flight via the website.

Airlines have been packing more people in each plane, so when a major carrier has a technology crash it’s harder to find seats for the waylaid.

Q: What do you say to fliers who are hesitant to book new flights on Delta? A spokeswoman said in an email that there would be an update later in the morning.

The massive power outage started around 2:30am ET on Monday and left flight airport departure and arrival screens on the fritz.

Delta’s problems began early Monday when a power outage in Atlanta shut down its computer systems. He said other Georgia Power customers were not affected because it was an issue with Delta equipment. Even brief outages can now snarl traffic and, as the Delta incident shows, those problems can go global in seconds.

That happened Monday night to Megan Milan who was on an 8:45 p.m. flight from Atlanta back home to Denver.
