A backlog of delayed Delta Air Lines flights in Anchorage has cleared, according to an airport spokeswoman.

A spokesman for Georgia Power said that the company believes a failure of Delta equipment caused the airline’s power outage. At the time, Delta warned of “large-scale cancellations”.

Delta grounded flights worldwide after experiencing unspecified issues with its computer systems globally. Delta has advised travellers to check the status of their flights today morning while it is addressing the issue. No timetable for a resolution or estimates for residual delays were given. And, it said: “If your flight is canceled or significantly delayed, you are entitled to a refund”.

“Customers headed to airports should expect delays/cancellations”, Delta said on Twitter.

“We are aware that flight status systems, including airport screens, are incorrectly showing flights on time”, the airline said.

“We’re working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue”, said Delta.

Computer outages have caused major headaches for airlines and travellers before.

There were zero departures between 3 a.m. ET and 6:20 a.m. ET, during which time, 192 flights (not counting regional departures) were scheduled to depart, many from Europe, the Eastern U.S., and Asia.

Airlines depend on huge, overlapping and complicated systems to operate flights, schedule crews and run ticketing, boarding, airport kiosks, websites and mobile phone apps.

“Our systems are down everywhere”, the company’s official Twitter account tweeted, answering some of its customers’ angry tweets. They also confirm that Flights en-route are operating normally. Travelers with a ticket for August 8 may make a one-time change to their ticket without a fee for Delta tickets.

Just last month, Southwest Airlines was forced to cancel more than 2,000 flights when a computer router failed.

The Flightradar24 website showed a flight from Phoenix to Atlanta had taken off, while three planes had departed from Amsterdam to USA destinations.

“Several applications were affected, including the company’s website”.
