Delta flights in Rochester largely on track

Delta Airline’s flight cancellations from a computer glitch extended into a second day Tuesday as the airline attempts to normalize its schedule.

Airlines have been putting more people in each plane, so when a system of a major carrier crashes, as has happened with others before Delta, finding a new seat for those affected becomes more hard.

The Associated Press reports that the airline has already cancelled 250 flights Tuesday as it tries to get back to a normal schedule a day after it canceled 1,000 flights and delayed almost 3,000 others. Ticket lines were still moving at a decent pace.

Today, as the Associated Press reports, the extent of the electronic mishap can be examined: around 1,000 total flights (a massive jump from the 300 intitally reported around noon yesterday) were canceled and 2,900 delayed. When the power came back some systems switched to backups, others didn’t and that, Delta said, caused “instability in these systems”.

Delta Air Lines canceled hundreds of flights Tuesday and had lots of delays due to lingering disruptions. The airline offered compensation to customers significantly affected by delays or cancellations.

The outage began around 2:30 a.m. ET Monday and lasted until about 8:40 a.m., forcing Delta to hold departing flights at the gate.

Dozens of others passengers who had been anxiously waiting to get out of line and onto a plane said they, too, were fed up.

“By the time I showed up at the gate the employees were already disgruntled, and it was really hard to get anybody to speak to me or get any information”.

The outage will hurt Delta’s reputation for punctuality and lack of cancellations. The airline is still recovering from a computer outage Monday. Other airlines proactively canceled flights to give the few remaining ones a better chance of getting out of the airport. In addition to the updates provided on Delta’s website and mobile app, the airline is also offering discounts to passengers inconvenienced by the outage.

In New York, two flights from John F. Kennedy International and two from LaGuardia are canceled.

“There is always a delay, or weather, or something”, he said.

“It’s a fair criticism”, says Kaplan, managing partner of Airline Weekly, an independent publication that follows the industry.
