Paul International Airport – grounded flights worldwide due to a computer outage that began around 1:30 a.m. Monday, a news release says. “We apologize to customers who are affected by this issue, and our teams are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible”, Delta said on its website. Airline employees have started to try manually checking customers into their flights.

As of about 1400 GMT, the airline said it had cancelled about 300 flights. The company had said its IT systems were down “everywhere”.

By 8:40 a.m., the airline issued an update saying that the order grounding flights had been lifted. Delta has about 120 flights in and out of the airport per day.

Delta’s Twitter feed continually provided the information that flights in the air were operating, but that passengers on the ground should check for delays.

At Los Angeles and San Francisco, passengers on Sunday night’s red-eye flights to JFK and Atlanta were taken off planes and led back into terminals – with no estimate on when they will be able to depart. People on some routes are being allowed to make a one-time change to their travel plans. It warned customers to expect “large-scale” cancellations.

Industry consultants say airlines face an increasing risk from computer disruptions as they automate more of their operations, distribute boarding passes on smartphones and fit their aircraft with Wi-Fi.

Nashville International Airport spokeswoman Shannon Sumrall said passengers should check their flight status with their respective airline before heading to the airport.

A spokesman for Georgia Power told The Associated Press that the company believes failure of Delta equipment caused the airline’s power outage.
