Delta canceled more than 300 flights Tuesday morning as it “worked to reset the operation and get crews, aircraft and other operational elements in place to take care of customers”, the airline said.

Tuesday morning at Sky Harbor Airport, some passengers said their flights were delayed an hour or two, but the airline was working to get them on their way. Systems are now fully operational and flights have resumed but delays and cancellations remain as recovery efforts continue. Computer failures have forced United and other airlines to cancel flights in recent months, too. The airline’s computer systems were back online after a few hours Monday, but the ripple effects lingered.

Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian filmed a brief minute-long apology video in which to address the issue and formally express his regret to affected customers.

FlightStats, a flight tracking services, tallied nearly another 600 delayed flights as Delta tried to help out tens of thousands of passengers whose travel plans were disrupted.

Delta is also offering some compensation to travelers who have been “significantly affected” by delays or cancellations ($200 for anyone delayed over three hours, details here). The investigation of the outage is ongoing, but Banstetter said that there is no indication that the problems were caused by a hack or intentional breach of the system.

Flights that were already in the air when the outage occurred continued to their destinations, but flights on the ground remained there. It was narrowly beaten only by American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, with all of them flying mostly within the United States. Delta merged with Northwest Airlines eight years ago.
