Delta recovering after global outage delays, cancels flights

The world’s third-largest airline, Delta, suffered a complete shutdown of its computer systems yesterday (Monday), leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and stranding passengers around the world.

Even after the United States carrier lifted the order about six hours into the snafu, it warned of continued cancellations and delays, as tens of thousands of passengers around the globe were left stranded.

Delta said the technical glitch blues started with a power outage that triggered computer issues, which affected flights globally.

All Delta Flights at the Duluth International Airport did depart, but not without a few delays and a little extra work from the ground crew.

Passengers may opt for a full refund of their ticket price if their flight was delayed or canceled, Delta said.

A Georgia Power spokesman said it’s understood a failure of Delta’s equipment caused the airline’s power outage as no other customers were effected.

The company said its IT systems were down everywhere and “hopefully it won’t be much longer”.

The airline is offering refunds to passengers on canceled or “significantly delayed” flights. American also experienced breakdowns in 2015, including technology problems that briefly stopped flights at its big hub airports in Dallas, Chicago and Miami. “And once again I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused to you our customer”, he says.

Los Angeles Worlds Airports tweeted on Monday morning that Delta passengers need to check their flight status before traveling to the airport, adding that delays and cancellations remain in place. When boarding finally began for a Minneapolis flight – the first to take off – a Delta worker told people find friends who had wandered away from the gate area, or who might be sleeping off the delays.

“Normally you’ll get a notification on your phone that the flights are delayed”.

“There was a significant impact on the flights in Norfolk”, said Sterling, who did not know the number of flights or passengers affected as of Monday afternoon.

Eppley has 20 scheduled Delta takeoffs, and 20 Delta landings on Mondays, which is roughly a quarter of the day’s flights.
