Delta resumes some service after hours of global outage

Delta said passengers booked for travel August 8-12 would be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly delayed.

The carrier pointed to an overnight power outage in its hometown of Atlanta, saying that has “impacted Delta computer systems and operations worldwide, resulting in flight delays”.

Flights that were already in the air when the outage occurred continued to their destinations, but flights on the ground remained there. Flight-tracking service estimated almost 8,000 flights arrived late.

But there may be more of the same airline problems in the months to come as long-term reverberations follow on a tumultuous decade of mergers that swiftly consolidated the industry.

At DIA, passengers were able to use computers to check in starting around 5 a.m.

The outage does not appear to impact numerous departing Delta flights out of McGhee Tyson Airport.

It is unclear whether passengers on board flights to Ghana on Monday morning were affected by the delays.

Officials from the Portland International Jetport posted on Twitter that Delta has set up customer service centers at gates 4 and 8, as well as the ticket counter.

“Customers heading to the airport should expect delays and cancellations”, Delta warned in a statement. “The airline suspended departures, with airport agents writing out boarding passes by hand”.

Peter Taylor from Coventry had been due to fly to the American city of Boston on the 9.40am Delta flight from Heathrow’s terminal three. The airline blames a power outage at an Atlanta facility.

The company said travelers will be entitled to a refund if the flight is canceled or significantly delayed. At 7:00 a.m. Delta sent out a release acknowledging heavy delays, even while its flight status systems, including airport screens, incorrectly showed flights to be on time.

“These are the same aircraft, is the problem”, Bradbury said.

The airline ranks third globally when it comes to number of passengers carried, and this computer glitch certainly isn’t doing anything to get the week off to a good start for passengers. “Even if your flight is not canceled, you may make a one-time change to your ticket without fee”.
