Delta System Outage Triggers Delays Worldwide
Delta Airlines suffered a worldwide computer-system outage that grounded all of the airline’s departing flights Monday.

Delta Air Lines resumed limited flight service Monday after a power outage in Atlanta sparked a global computer shutdown for the world’s second largest airline.
The carrier, which is the world’s third-largest, said passengers should expect further delays and cancellations due to the knock-on effect from earlier problems.
Some Delta fights to and from Will Rogers were still operational, Carney said.
Computer outages have caused major headaches for airlines and travellers before. Planes that were already in the air were, thankfully, unaffected, but many scheduled Delta flights were grounded worldwide.
As of 9:30 a.m., Delta operated 800 of its almost 6,000 scheduled flights worldwide.
Check the airport’s website for flight statuses.
The airline tweeted in mid-morning that although its system was “coming back online”, there would be more delays and cancellations ahead.
But even if flights are not canceled, such customers are entitled to a one-time change to their tickets without a fee if the customer is scheduled to travel to, from, or through destinations specified by Delta Airline between August 8th and 12th 2016.
Delta said the outage began around 2:30 and said “large-scale cancelations are expected today”, according to a statement.
Frustrated customers posted about the delays throughout the morning on social media, including a flyer at LaGuardia Airport who tweeted video of a fire alarm going off at the airport’s Delta terminal.
They were also saying that all of their flights awaiting departure are ‘currently delayed’. All flights enroute are operating normally. However, airport officials are suggesting that passengers check with Delta for updates.
The company said its systems were down “everywhere” and “hopefully it won’t be much longer” until they are repaired.
Southwest in Dallas had its own computer-related crisis last month when about 600 to 700 flights were canceled or delayed on its network because of what it described as performance issues with its technology systems.

The airline said several applications were affected, including its website, with technicians working to fix the problem.
