Ba, 31, had netted 14 goals in 18 appearances for Shanghai Shenhua this season but appeared to badly break his leg in a tangle with a Shanghai SIPG FC defender.

The challenge from Xiang was clumsy but not sinister and the Shenhua frontman comes into difficulty when his studs get caught in the ground as he body twists towards the turf.

After the game head coach Gregorio Manzano described the tackle as “horrendous”, adding: “It could end Ba’s professional career. God is unfair. Ba is too good to have this happen to him”.
