Demi Lovato felt “very conflicted” when her father, Patrick Lovato, died

Demi Lovato‘s new Confident self is large, in charge and ready to inspire her fans to be happy. After giggling and brushing off his hand, she was forced into a corner as he continued to gyrate.

Lovato was singing her recently released single Confident.

“This song shows a side of me that I’ve never shown before, and that’s ‘Don’t mess with me, ‘” she said. The shot of the middle school which is 13 seconds in verifies that it is indeed a tribute to her own time in middle school, and strengthens the music video as her own kind of revenge fantasy, as she professes over and over again “I’ll be waiting for you”. “Now I know what’s good for me/ All that I need”, she sings, asserting that, “I’m the only who can do somethin’ about it”. She did not break her unimaginable vocals when she made eye contact with one of many dancer’s tight trousers. While she occasionally veers too close to oversinging on the track, Lovato’s raw performance arguably puts forth her most convincing case for post-Disney stardom.

It’s nearly impossible not to cheer her on at this point. His mental illness was severe as told by the singer, but still has a huge heart towards his family. On tracks like “Father”, her tendency to belt at the end of the track ruins an otherwise emotionally potent moment in which Lovato struggles to come to grips with the death of her estranged father.

While Demi is now the confident, cool-for-the-summer girl we all know and love, she wasn’t always the strong woman she is today. After all, like the hook of the title track says, “What’s wrong with being confident?”.

On “Confident”, the bold, grownup electro-pop undercurrents of the record render this talent unnecessary, and Lovato is able to express her own ups and downs with fame and self-worth unimpeded by the expectations of her audience.
