Beyond his credibility, Trump also attacked Cruz’s likability, saying no one really likes the senator. “Stick with a plan”.

Cruz’s campaign was challenged by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate over a mailer sent to potential voters that seemed created to look like an official notice warning recipients about “low expected voter turnout in your area”. We announced that we have received throughout this campaign and this is so unbelievable, never in a million years would I have thought this possible.

The front runners in the opening round of the race to see which candidates run for U.S. president are just a few percentage points apart from each other.

Cruz said on “Fox News Sunday” that he’s attracting “the old Reagan coalition” ranging from anti-establishment conservatives to working-class Democrats. That’s a two-edged sword, because it raises the expectations for Trump. Once the first set of voters get a say, some of the candidates on the margins are likely to take the hint and step aside.

“One of the reasons I’ll win them”, he explained, “(is) a lot of Democrats are going to cross over to me because they’re exhausted of what’s happening”.

Rubio shot back, telling CNN that as voters learn more about Cruz’s record, they will understand that “he’s always looking to take whatever position it takes to win votes or raise money”.

Republican Donald Trump went with straight-up guilt to inspire his legion of fans.

The campaigns were anxiously keeping an eye on the weather.

He has a strong appeal among Iowa’s religious community.

Bush, for example, started the year as a fundraising juggernaut.

The caucuses begin at 7 p.m. Central time as voters gather at locations scattered around the state. Unlike the Republican caucuses, Democrats report delegate totals, not vote totals. “Sanders talks about how a high turnout is better, he is exactly right about that”.

Among the wide Republican field, recent polling suggests that businessman Mr Trump has a comfortable, though not certain, lead over his main rival, Texas Senator Mr Cruz. Barack Obama in 2008 when buzz about his candidacy generated the largest voter turnout in Iowa’s primary caucus history.

Iowa has decidedly mixed results in picking the parties’ eventual nominees. Rick Santorum – faded as the race stretched on.

Obviously, the top line is: Who wins?

Ames resident and regular caucus goer Jerry Littzul, however, narrowed his options down to Cruz and Trump and said he would decide Monday night. Registered Republicans, including same-day registrants, show up tonight, listen to short pitches from each campaign, and vote by secret ballot. The delegates are awarded proportionally based on those results.

On the question of whether a candidate is well-liked, 82 percent of people had a favorable view of Sanders, while 81 percent had a favorable view of Clinton.
