Democratic National Convention: Debbie Wasserman Schultz forgoes opening event following resignation

In Philadelphia, supporters of Bernie Sanders were not hard to find, and when he addressed his delegates Monday, the Vermont senator was not about to let the resignation of the Democratic Party chairwoman go without a few words. This week, they are Sanders delegates at the convention.

“The decision for her is that the office of the president is more important”, Joanne Goodwin, a Clinton delegate who wore a Wasserman Schultz for Congress shirt, said of the chairman’s decision to step down.

Sanders’ bid pushed Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic Party’s platform to the left on some issues like setting the minimum wage at $15 per hour, free college education for most Americans and pursuing universal healthcare. “He’s doing it the Bernie Sanders way”, he said. He said it was imperative to elect Clinton and her running mate, Virginia Sen.

Clinton beat Sanders by fewer than 2,000 votes in Kentucky’s Democratic Primary in May.

-The Democrats needed this, on the eve of the opening Monday of their convention in Philadelphia, like they needed the “police riot” in Chicago in 1968. He stunned the Clinton campaign with his broad support among young people and liberals, as well as his online fundraising prowess.

The embarrassment caused by leaked emails not only cost Wasserman Schultz her position as head of the DNC, it’s also providing fodder for her primary-election opponent. The release of hacked party emails revealed the Democratic National Committee had favored Clinton over Sanders in the primary, despite vows of neutrality. Frankly, I admire her.

Clinton’s team hoped Wasserman Schultz’s resignation – along with an apology from the DNC to Sanders and his supporters – would keep the convention floor calm.

In the interview, Trump acknowledged that critics viewed his presidential nomination acceptance speech as “a little dark”, but said he “thought it was very optimistic” because “we’re going to fix the problems”. It appears that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump ran as a Republican for the same reason Mr. Sanders ran as a Democrat.

When Clinton was asked in a 60 Minutes clip that wasn’t broadcast if she viewed “any effort in the DNC to favor one candidate or another would have been improper”, she said that she couldn’t “answer specifically” because she didn’t have any information on that. As she began talking, though, audience members wearing Bernie Sanders shirts started shouting and yelling, waving signs that said “Thanks for the “Help” Debbie” and signs that simply read “e-mails”.
