Democratic presidential debate airs on Channel 2
The Vermont senator, however, performs better than Clinton in a general election matchup against the current GOP frontrunner, billionaire Donald Trump. “What we will do is be supportive of this legislation”. Sanders also argues that as a “senator from a rural state that has virtually no gun control” he’s in an “excellent position to bring people together on the politically sensitive issue”.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. She quipped that she’s so determined to work in a bipartisan way that she once even collaborated with former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, a hard-edged Texas Republican. “I swear to you”, Trump said. Sanders is centering his campaign on making wealthy Americans pay what he calls their “fair share”.
Martin O’Malley says investing in cities will be a top priority in his first days in office. “But I was a little disappointed that what Chelsea said was simply not accurate”.
“Senator Sanders has been changing a lot of positions in the last 24 hours because when his plans and record come under scrutiny, their very real flaws get exposed”, Clinton said in a statement responding to the plan.
“Sanders is making them up as he goes along”. “Now I hope he will flip-flop on what we call the Charleston loophole, and join legislation to close that, because it’s been a key argument of my campaign that we Democrats, in fact, Americans need to stand up to the gun lobby and pass comprehensive common-sense gun measures that will make America safer”.
He added that Clinton’s attacks over the bills were a “distortion of reality”.
Clinton immediately cast the move as a “flip-flop”, in a series of interviews on Sunday morning talk shows.
Asked during the debate if he had flip-flopped on the gun issue, Sanders defended the 2005 bill, saying it banned ammunition “that would have killed cops” wearing armor and had child-safety requirements.
“There were things in it that I did not like, and I was willing to rethink”, he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press”.
Last week while campaigning for her mother, Chelsea Clinton said Sanders’ plan would “dismantle” the US health care system.
But much of the cost would be paid for through a 6.2 percent payroll tax paid by employers and a 2.2 percent “health care premium” on workers.
Clinton suggested Sanders’ approach was risky – and pie-in-the-sky unrealistic.
Clinton favors building on the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, and has said Sanders’ state-administered plan would jeopardize the healthcare of those with Republican governors.
“I have doubts people receiving large amounts of money from Wall Street”, Sanders said on Sunday.
Hillary Clinton has widened her lead to 25 percentage points in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.
Both candidates are competing for black voters in SC, which hosts the fourth primary contests. At a party fundraising dinner Saturday night, they vowed to change criminal justice policies.

Casting herself as a candidate who would embrace President Barack Obama’s agenda and build on it, Clinton went after Sanders not just on Wall Street and healthcare but also on gun control. The evening offers perhaps his last chance to improve his standing in the race.
