Democratic Presidential Debate: Charlie Rose

One of the testier exchanges of the debate came when Clinton criticized Sanders over his position on guns in her most direct attack on her opponent yet.

She noted the debate was “very civilized” and that there was “no denigration of women as we have seen in the past”.

Five donation jars, one for each democratic candidate, were set out by the Eastern Panhandle Young Democrats, sponsors of Tuesday night’s debate watch event at the Opera House in Shepherdstown. He appeared reasonable and rational – a win for anyone who is running as an Independent and is a self-proclaimed socialist. It should be said that the other candidates, all of them reasonable, thoughtful people, tried to invigorate the debate and make it about more than Clinton and her challenger-in-chief, Sanders. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and former Virginia Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a former Rhode Island Governor, clocked in at around nine minutes, but his perpetual smile failed to show any disappointment in that fact. Described by them as “for the people”, “strong”, “straight forward”, “confident”, “sincere”, “powerful”, and “smart”. Sanders was the surprise of the night.

After Cooper brought up the inevitable – Clinton’s private email controversy – Sander’s piped in, offering his own take on the issue. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., hold a lead among young voters.

Lesperance agreed that Republicans likely are still trying to use Sanders against the former secretary of state. “So you know, in that kind of an environment, you know, I was either going to be Mr. Angry or I was going to be a potted plant”. Our trade policies have cost us millions of decent jobs.

Sanders said the campaign should focus on issues of more importance to middle-class and poor Americans. With a polished and engaging performance, she effectively erased so numerous questions that have been dogging her campaign of late. “Is there anybody else on the stage who is not a capitalist?” According to him, he’s for the people.

The fundraising letter notes that despite his lack of time, Mr. Webb scored well in many post-debate scorecards, finishing second in online polls conducted for MSNBC and the Drudge Report.

On the economy, Sanders called for a $15 an hour minimum wage and all public universities to become tuition-free to reduce income inequality. The question remaining, at least in my mind: Is there any room for Biden?

Both Sanders and Clinton were looking Wednesday to build on their strong debate performances as the rest of the field struggled to gain traction.
