Democratic Presidential Primary Gets Real

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Friday brushed aside remarks by Vice President Biden earlier this week that income inequality is a “relatively new” issue for her. But when it comes to the pricey undertaking of dominating the broadcast airwaves, the underdog has become the top dog. In 2008, she decisively lost black voters to Obama, but in this cycle it is Sanders who is weak with non-whites, and who will therefore likely suffer as the campaign moves out of heavily-white Iowa and New Hampshire.

But according to a interview on NBC’s Today show, Hillary Clinton rejected the idea that her campaign went on the offensive against Bernie Sanders after the Vermont senator began gaining on her in the polls.

The Clinton campaign, however, has distanced itself from Brock’s attack. In fact, the first time Clinton ran for president, in 2008, Obama attacked her for supporting a similar plan.

But campaign manager Robby Mook downplayed the ad wars during a call with reporters Thursday, saying it’s hard to compare the two campaigns based exclusively on dollars spent or number of ads purchased overall. “But if it’s Donald Trump, it’ll be quite the showdown”.

Sanders, a USA senator from Vermont, has pulled into a statistical tie with Clinton in recent polls in Iowa, which holds the first contest on February 1 in the race to pick a nominee for the November election.

“It was probably never going be a straight line – we hoped it would be but feared it wouldn’t be”, said James Carville, the Democratic strategist on Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign and a longtime friend of the Clintons. Sanders, while just 44 percent support Clinton.

“I welcome support from anyone in Congress who now recognizes the need to repeal the immunity Congress granted the gun industry in 2005”, Schiff told BuzzFeed News. “It’s a risk, but politics is a risk business, and you gotta decide what risks you’re gonna take”. This means that the national polls, which still show Clinton in the lead, may be skewed by the lack of engagement of these voters.

“The whole premise of Sanders’ campaign is that he can not bring these changes alone”. Her once-comfortable lead over Sanders in Iowa is now just four points, basically a toss-up. They appeared together at a Des Moines high school Saturday night before at least 500 people, encouraging people to caucus. The New Hampshire primary is February 9.

“We’re really at the front end of the process for states beyond Iowa and New Hampshire”, said Sanders adviser Tad Devine.

Clinton’s aides said it was “simply not possible” to implement Sanders’ plan – which they say would dismantle Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act – without raising taxes on the middle class. Clinton has pledged not to raise taxes on the middle class. Her own husband lost both primaries before coming back to win the presidency in 1992.
