Democrats call on Paul Ryan to prioritize paid family leave as speaker

Critics quickly pounced on the statement, pointing out that Ryan had voted down legislation for paid parental leave in the past.

In Racine Monday, Democrats and family advocates called Ryan out.

Brooks, a member of the Freedom Caucus, said Tuesday on the House floor that he plans to support Ryan for Speaker based on “my trust that Paul Ryan is a man of his word”.

Ryan is all but assured of being chosen by House Republicans on Wednesday to replace the outgoing John Boehner. That bill, sponsored by Republican lawmakers, is primarily aimed at giving workers the ability to choose “comp time” off, instead of overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours per week.

Tomika Vukovic, 43, of Glendale, said she was forced to return to work just days after losing her second child, who was born premature.

Last week, Brooks stated that Ryan has the “absolutely worst record on border security of any Republican in the House of Representatives”.

Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) addressed the U.S. House Tuesday, submitting a letter agreed to by Rep. Paul Ryan (WI-01) which formalizes his pledges regarding comprehensive immigration reform, or amnesty, bills.

Between the hesitation to endorse Ryan to this latest immigration agreement, the House Freedom Caucus is making Ryan’s climb to the speakership a rocky one. It’s being sold by the Speaker of the House as a victory on entitlement reform.

Ryan is expected to be selected by his GOP colleagues Wednesday, which would provide him the votes needed to be elected the 62nd speaker by the full Republican-controlled House the following day.
