Democrats gather at State Fair to energize party
“When I talk to my colleagues in the Senate from all over the United States, they all say, ‘The road to a majority of Democrats in the Senate starts in the state of Illinois”, Durbin said. She criticized the freshman for a recent series of gaffes.

Illinois Democrats say they’re in an “epic” struggle with the state’s new Republican governor. Illinois is the first state to include a connection between conversion therapy and consumer fraud. Then-gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner called the spending plan “phony”, while the party in power acknowledged it was “incomplete” and riddled with gimmicks.
Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed several bills affecting veterans including a measure establishing a discount card and another offering property tax breaks for those with military-related disabilities.
We’ve been critical of Rauner’s anti-union agenda to the extent that it has precipitated the current state budget impasse, which could portend very bad things to come for the state. “We will not throw the middle class under the bus”. They see Kirk as particularly vulnerable because of some recent gaffes. Mark Kirk, despite having the backing of the national Democratic establishement. He says Democrats have “created a mess” during years of one-party rule. But GOP leaders said it’s realistic, particularly if an effort to change the way political maps are drawn is successful, or if Republicans keep the governor’s office. Is he controlled by Speaker (Michael) Madigan or … is he independent and can make his own decisions.
Governor Bruce Rauner’s arrival by motorcycle revved up a noisy protest.
The fight has led to a stalemate over the state budget. He adds: “We are willing to work with Gov. Rauner but we don’t work for Gov. Rauner”.
With Democrats pushing back against Rauner’s attempts to weaken labor unions, state government is in gridlock and programs that help the elderly, mentally ill and poor are closing down.
“It’s all good”, Rauner said, laughing.
CPS, the nation’s third-largest public school system, is drowning under rapidly rising pension costs that are largely to blame for a $1.1 billion budget hole.
The comment is a reference to Republican Comptroller Leslie Munger, who described herself Wednesday as Rauner’s budgetary “wingman”.
Andrea Zopp, the former head of the Chicago Urban League, touted her family history.
We’ll have more on Democrat Day and the latest news from Springfield with Chicago Tonight’s Amanda Vinicky. Her campaign has criticized the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for backing Duckworth, accusing the group of not taking into account the African-American community.
