Bobby Parnell’s brutal weekend has cost him a spot in the Mets bullpen.
Manager Terry Collins didn’t mince words when talking about Parnell, the veteran who is in his first year back from Tommy John (elbow) surgery.
In 23 relief appearances this season, Parnell has posted a 5.59 ERA and has performed progressively worse in each outing since the All-Star break.
Parnell allowed two earned runs and three hits without retiring a batter in Friday night’s 3-2 loss.
Parnell had a rough weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates, suffering two losses.

The Mets are managing the innings of their young pitchers, but Collins said they’ll be available when it matters at the end of the season, and potentially in the playoffs. The sample size is small for Verrett, but he has pitched well with the Mets this season. Logan Verrett was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Parnell’s spot on the roster. While they wait to see if anyone can step up and add depth to their bullpen, all the Mets can do is hope that Familia and Clippard can continue to get the job done in the 8th and 9th innings.
