He would finish his career with 28 medals overall, having won five golds and a silver at these games.
“The gold medal means so much, but also to the team because we had such an unbelievable energy in the call room”, she told reporters after anchoring Denmark to a bronze medal in the 4×100 medley relay about 45 minutes after the 50 freestyle. The women’s 50 freestyle is scheduled to take place today at 9:03PM in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The last time an American woman won gold in the event was 1984, when Nancy Hogshead and Carrie Steinseifer also tied. She posted a 24.44 in the semifinals to qualify sixth, but she’s proven to be a strong finisher.
Bronze went to Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus, who was swimming from the outside lane. The other two were won by Karen-Margrete Harup (100m backstroke) and Greta Anderson (100m freestyle) at the 1948 London Games.
They were shut out of an individual medal again, with Cate finishing fifth and Bronte seventh.
Connor Jaeger of the United States took the silver in 14:39.48, while the bronze went to another Italian, Gabriele Detti, in 14:40.86.
