Dentists forgot to study flossing for a century, recommended it anyway
Raschkovsky told VICE she has personally observed a reduction in gum bleeding in patients who began a new flossing regimen. Dentists provide samples to patients; the American Dental Association insists on its website that, “Flossing is an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums”.

Cape Girardeau resident Raf Camp said sometimes the effort outweighs the benefit and his flossing. Another said there was only “inconsistent/weak evidence” for flossing and a “lack of efficacy”. A dentist with the National Institutes of Health told the AP that it may eventually be appropriate to drop the floss guidelines, but only after more rigorous research is done.
“Since neither the 2010 nor 2015 Advisory Committees reviewed evidence on brushing and flossing teeth, the authors of the current edition decided not to carry forward the information on brushing and flossing included in past editions of the guidelines”, she says.
Professor Damien Walmsley, 58, of Birmingham University, said the time and expense required for reliable studies meant the health claims often attributed to floss were unproven. If it’s any consolation, there is some mediocre evidence that flossing does reduce bloody gums and inflammation known as gingivitis.
Donn looked at 25 studies and their results were “weak, very unreliable”, of “very low” quality, and carry “a moderate to large potential for bias”, said a review conducted past year.
Flossing can also occasionally cause harm, with a poor technique leading to damaged gums and teeth.
“It was a surprise because it’s nearly something that’s ingrained in our DNA as dentists”, says Joan Otomo-Corgel, a periodontist with the American Academy of Periodontology who practices in Los Angeles.
Still, despite the change in the federal guidelines, Raschkovsky plans to keep giving patients that classic dentist’s bargain: floss or face a reprimand at your next visit. So if you don’t like your gums to bleed, you might still want to make flossing a priority.
“What general dentists like myself are aware of is what they see in their patients’ mouths on a day-in, day-out basis”, Levin said Tuesday from Hamilton, where he practices. Each tooth should be cleaned by wrapping the floss in a C-shape around the base of the tooth and sliding the floss from base to tip two or three times. For decades, dental groups, floss manufacturers and other organizations have urged people to floss.
Regardless, he added, Americans should still floss.
Local dentists aren’t convinced by the research.
IAFOLLA: The condition we’re trying to prevent, which is gum disease, is something that takes years to develop, and most of the studies only last for a few weeks or a few months. The American Academy of Periodontology agrees.

I think the government has probably been right about seat belts but I am going to draw my own conclusions on coffee, red meat, beer, all of which I have now officially decided are part of a healthy breakfast. Researchers could not find any studies on the effectiveness of flossing combined with brushing for cavity prevention.
