Denver Broncos justify illegal Cam Newton hits
The NFL will review how the Panthers’ medical team handled a hit to Cam Newton’s head during Carolina’s loss to Denver in the season opener.

“It was a pretty good collision, ” Norwood said. However, the victory over the favored Panthers and reigning league MVP Cam Newton should mean another increase for Siemian heading into Week 2.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton sits on the turf after being hit during the first half of the game against the Denver Broncos on Thursday in Denver.
Only Stewart’s hit was penalized – and that was a flag thrown from far away by referee Gene Steratore, who saw what the back judge positioned near the play could not.
The former Denver Broncos receiver and Ring of Fame member was none too pleased with the disrespect the team got, again, from the so called “experts” prior to Thursday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
While Rivera recognizes the difficulty of the task facing game officials, he would like to see officials successfully fight human nature and not swallow their whistles because of the unique physical qualities Newton brings to the quarterback position.
And, to be sure, Newton’s running ability puts him in harm’s way a lot more often than a pure drop-back passer. “It’s not my job to question the officials”, Newton said.
In a game that seemed nearly destined to not go the Broncos way, and drawing controversy on the Broncos side before the game even started with Brandon Marshall taking a knee during the national anthem the Broncos pulled off a win.
That’s no reason for the officials to continually look the other way.
Last night’s NFL kickoff featured a pre-game protest, a game-breaking missed field goal, and, of course, an apparent breach of the league’s concussion protocol.
“I prayed about it, man”, Stewart said.
The next player might not be so lucky.
Both Marshall and Stewart could face fines.
ESPN reports: “Marshall’s hit was a violation of Rule 12, Section 2, Article 6 (i) of the National Football League rulebook, which prohibits a defender from using his helmet to butt, spear or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily”. He had 11 carries for 54 yards on Thursday night, and all but one of them was a called run. While the targeting rule still has its share of hiccups, the replay system helps to weed out the calls that are blatantly wrong, an important safeguard when a foul comes with such stiff penalties.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is the reigning MVP of the National Football League, but coach Ron Rivera says he isn’t being treated like someone of that stature.
Kiz: When I asked Broncos coach Gary Kubiak point blank if his team played dirty against the Panthers, he categorically denied the allegation, preferring to label the style of play as aggressive. “We were playing hard”. The union has questioned why Newton didn’t undergo a cognitive exam on the sideline during the game. Maybe he’s gotten so used to being subjected to a different standard that he expects it.

“I’m not just going to always say it’s race; I’m not going to keep fanning the flames of race in every situation”, Cecil Newton said. The referees need to be sanctioned for not throwing the flag.
