Denver Broncos’ Quarterback Battle Takes a Turn

Denver beat reporters KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis and KGMH-TV’s Troy Renck both report that quarterback Trevior Siemian will start the club’s third preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams with Mark Sanchez loosing his best shot at starting in the regular season opener at the Carolina Panther on September 8.

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos in their second pre season game.

I think the 49ers go without a third quarterback to start, thinking they can get Driskel to the practice squad. It’s down to the nitty-gritty here.

Fantasy impact: In all likelihood, we’re going to see all three quarterbacks in the game on Saturday.

Sanchez entered in the second quarter after Siemian.

Is the job Siemian’s to lose?

The drama of 2015 has helped the players deal with the quarterback battle in training camp.

I think that’s because Kubiak wants to see how both Siemian and the rookie Paxton Lynch plays against the Rams. With a three-way battle going on for the starting quarterback position, that might not happen for the Broncos at this time. “We’re going to go again this week and we’ll make a decision next week”.

Siemian started against the 49ers and mostly played it safe outside of one nice roll out throw to tight end Virgil Green.

Siemian has thrown for 163 yards, completing 17-of-26 throws, tossing 0 touchdowns and one interception, good enough for a passer rating of 66.7. Mike Davis who played well in the first pre season game had two fumbles last night and Draughn didn’t get a carry last night.

This is still the same Sanchez that led the New York Jets to two straight AFC Championships, granted that was about 6-7 years ago, but injuries and backup duties have stripped him of another opportunity.

After Lynch completed 15 of 26 passes for 113 yards, two touchdowns and one interception at home against the San Francisco 49ers, Kubiak’s upcoming decision is getting increasingly more hard.

This unit was ok, but must play better, or this year will be an absolute joke. In the thick of a tense quarterback competition, Paxton Lynch is garnering the attention of coach Gary Kubiak.

Beyond the quarterbacks, the guys discuss the hole in the Broncos offensive line, the competition at running back and some of the mistakes made on the defensive side of the ball last week. Lynch also had one costly interception that sealed the game for the Niners, but overall he looked a lot more ready to start than Siemian and Sanchez.

And no matter what happens, Kubiak said he does not plan to play all three quarterbacks in the preseason finale at Arizona on September 1. Colin Kaepernick will hopefully return to practice this week, but in the meantime, I thought I’d take a look at where things stand.
