Depp’s ‘Alice’ bombs, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ on top with $65M
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is showing superhero power at the US box office with a formidable $80 million over the four day of the Memorial Day holiday – doubling “Alice Through the Looking Glass”, Saturday estimates showed.

FILE – In this image released by Twentieth Century Fox, Tye Sheridan, left, and Sophie Turner appear in a scene from, “X-Men: Apocalypse”. Three of the last five holidays yielded top openers (“Hangover 2”, “Fast and Furious 6”, “X-Men: Days of Future Past”) that soared over $85 million for the three days and $100 million for four. That’s a disastrous start for a film with an $170 million production budget. The R-rated comedy starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen has an estimated box office of $40.42 million.
Bryan Singer’s fourth X-Men extravaganza certainly has its fair share of flaws, but it’s also a hell of a lot of fun, thanks to some terrific new additions to the cast and a plethora of exciting action sequences. Apparently only X-Men Origins – Wolverine received worst reviews, with an approval rating of 38% (I’m sure if rated today, most if not all would give this one a negative review).
Before Heard’s court appearance on Friday, Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” sequel had been expected to open above $60 million.
The sequel to 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland”, which would go on to earn over $1 billion worldwide, isn’t going to do the same business.
Spoiler alert! The following contains major plot details from X-Men: ApocalypseAlso the post-credits scenes.
The James Bobin-directed Alice Through the Looking Glass stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, Rhys Ifans, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall.
Overall business over the weekend, according to comScore, was up about 5 percent from Memorial Day previous year when Disney’s “Tomorrowland” bombed with $33 million. The numbers have slowly begun to roll in, and it’s looking more and more like X-Men: Apocalypse will absolutely decimate Alice Through the Looking Glass this weekend.

Sony and Rovio’s “The Angry Birds Movie”, which entered the second week, came third with an estimated 24 million. There are a couple of good ones here and there, but Marvel has basically reached a point where Captain America is a villain in his own franchise, which isn’t necessarily an insult considering that Captain America: Civil War is fantastic.
