The threatening email was sent to someone at the Two Rivers Magnet High School and said that a student was coming to school Thursday with a gun, Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley said.
District spokeswoman Erin James said school staffers had received a credible report of a gun on the campus around 9:45 a.m.
Ragsdale and several other schools in the area were placed on lockdown, and officials say a quick response prevented the situation from escalating.
He was taken into custody on school grounds and the gun itself was recovered nearby using a K-9 unit.
Police said a student was questioned and they are trying to determine if it was a joke or serious.
At this point, Powers said he does not know where the student got the gun or if it was loaded.
Students and staff members remained in their rooms during the search as a preventative safety measure for themselves, as well as for the police officers searching the building, according to the release.
