Deputy Killed in Louisiana Was Shot in Back 3 Times, Police Say

Nearly 24 hours before authorities say Jerman Neveaux fatally shot a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputy who’d stopped him in Harvey, the New Orleans 19-year-old was text messaging with a friend about finding a gun and a victim to rob, Sheriff Newell Normand said.

Normand said the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jerman Neveaux, pulled a revolver and fired a total of three shots into Michel’s back during the confrontation.

Normand said the suspect admitted shooting the officer and said he was on probation for another offense and didn’t want the officer to find the gun and arrest him.

Normand also said he has turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation video that appears to show officers hitting Neveaux after capturing him. He pulled a gun on a man bigger than him and reached over him and shot him in the back. “Normand said the video shows Neveaux “. being struck by our officers while attempting to gain control of Neveaux”.Russell said one deputy entered the home and found Wade in a back room, while the other deputy remained outside covering a window.”He scolded them. The sheriff said video given to them by a witness shows officers surrounding Neveaux as he was apprehended in a backyard. “He was well-liked. It was quite obvious at the hospital how many friends he had”, he said.A spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, John Fortunato, said in a news release Thursday that Detective David Michel will be laid to rest Monday.

Louisiana State Police and Monroe police, along with other sheriff’s deputies, searched the area for the suspect.

“He’s been a member, both full-time and reserve, for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office since 2007”.

“At this time, we don’t have the details about what prompted this stop”, Fortunato said. And he put fear in them.

After the arrest, the offender was taken to hospital to treat a fractured eye scoket and cuts and scrapes to his face.

A man accused of shooting and killing a deputy outside New Orleans will be held in jail until trial.

Sheriff Newell Normand was out of town but was returning immediately and planned a news conference for 10 p.m. “They never did it again”, she said. He said investigators confirmed Neveaux was looking for more weapons. “Taking turns beating him”, Laday said.

“The talk about lurking and who they’re going to “jack up” because they need money”.

Deputy Chief Craig Taffaro, who commands the parish’s operations division, said Michel was a cheerful man who loved his job. “He was a great guy”. Michel was working in the street crimes unit, which targets drug sales and criminal activity in 17 high-crime areas around the parish, Taffaro told the AP.
