The BCA has not identified the deputy or which county the deputy worked in, saying only that he or she was from outside the St. Cloud area.

Hammond grabbed Sandberg’s gun during the struggle and shot him, Evans said.

Sandberg had been with the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office for 24 years, including the past 20 years as an investigator. “After he was taken into custody he became unresponsive”.

Hospital security responded and used a taser on Hammond to subdue him.

Investigators say the suspect, 50-year-old Danny Hammond gained control of Sandberg’s gun during a struggle. Evans said more information about the cause of Hammond’s death would be available after an autopsy.

No other patients or personnel were injured and there is no ongoing threat to the public’s safety.

St. Cloud Hospital staff had asked for a sheriff’s deputy to monitor Hammond during his time in the hospital due to the “seriousness” of the domestic incident he was allegedly involved in, St. Cloud Hospital vice president Kurt Otto said.

“I deplore the bad, senseless murder of Deputy Sheriff Steven Sandberg”. “On behalf of all MInnesotans, I extend my deepest condolences to his family. This tragedy reminds us that Minnesota’s law enforcement officers risk their lives every day and night to keep us safe”, Gov. Dayton said in a statement.
