The police were called just before 10 p.m. Monday with a report about someone with a weapon at a bus stop outside of a parking garage known as the “Green Garage”, across the street from the hospital’s main building.
“Personnel from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, already on scene at the hospital, arrived quickly and transported the shot person to the hospital a short distance away”, police said in a statement. Police did not say what part of the man’s body was hit.
The deputy was on assignment at the hospital and in uniform at the time.
Police say the man has non-life threatening injuries.
At that point “some sort of confrontation took place”, Gotthardt said.
“Preliminary information suggests that the man threatened the deputy with an unidentified object”, police said.
The sheriff’s office announced it would conduct an internal investigation and the deputy would be on routine administrative leave.
“Detectives from the Major Crimes Division of the police department responded and have assumed primary responsibility for the criminal investigation”.

“There is no further threat to the public and there are no other suspects”, police said in the news release.
