Deputy, Suspect Killed at St. Cloud Hospital

Hospital security responded to the Hammond’s hospital room and tasered him – he then became unresponsive and died after being taken into custody, Evans said.

The BCA says the suspect shot and killed the deputy.

The deputy, who guarding a person under investigation, was shot and killed around 5:15 a.m. CDT (1015 GMT) at St. Cloud Hospital, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The deputy is from outside the tri-county area, although authorities have not said yet which county he is from. The suspect later died, the release says, but officials didn’t elaborate on how the suspect died.

The St. Cloud Hospital is part of CentraCare Health, an integrated health care system that formed in 1995, according to its website.

More information is expected from a 1:30 p.m. press conference.

The deputy was identified as 60-year-old Steven Sandberg, while the suspect was 50-year-old Danny Hammond. No other patients or hospital personnel were injured.
