CSX officials say cleanup efforts will soon begin after one of its freight trains derailed in Washington, D.C.

A CSX freight train has derailed in Washington DC, spilling hazardous material near a city subway station before emergency workers plugged the leaked. The liquid spilled onto the tracks and seeped into the ground below it. Mayor Bowser said there are no air quality issues and that no water issues have been determined.

It was not immediately clear what caused the derailment. It is a chemical component similar to bleach or Drano, officials said. One of them leaked but has been sealed.

A CSX freight train has derailed in Washington, D.C., leaving several cars overturned and a possible hazardous leak. Florida-based CSX says that overnight, rail cars that were not involved in Sunday’s derailment were moved away from the site along with several cars that had derailed. Metro said it would establish bus shuttle service between the NoMa and Brookland stations. A set of wheels, still intact but missing its freight vehicle, sat upright beside the track bed. The tracks also run parallel to the Metropolitan Branch Trail, popular with cyclists and runners. The Metro tracks are above and adjacent to the derailment site. CSX says it is working with first responders to contain the chemical.

“She’s an environmentalist so she is very concerned about whatever is leaking”, he said.

If for any reason CSX is not able to turn over the scene, Stessel said, “that could affect service into the morning”.

Amtrak said in a statement Monday that its Capitol Limited train, which runs daily between Washington and Chicago, won’t run between Pittsburgh and the District of Columbia.

Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is used in the making of soaps, nylon and textiles, as well as food production. These materials aren’t quite as outright concerning as the sodium hydroxide leak.
