Derrick Henry offered a winning combination for Heisman
McCaffrey came closest to dethroning Henry, but he faced an uphill battle all season because of how Stanford started the year, with a 16-6 loss to Northwestern, along with the Cardinal’s frequent late-night kickoffs.

Getting to NY for the Heisman Trophy ceremony first crept into Deshaun Watson’s mind when he was in high school competing at the “Elite 11” camp for college recruits.
Henry thanked his Alabama family for making the transition from Yulee to Tuscaloosa as easy as possible.
“I didn’t know at all”, he said.
Throughout all of the Heisman hype and one of the best seasons in Stanford and college football history, McCaffrey has maintained his humility – he didn’t think he had a chance at being a finalist until “when they announced my name a couple days ago”, he said.
Prior to winning the award, Henry said numerous past Heisman winners were his heroes.
Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott was eighth.
Henry, the first running back to win the Maxwell Award – given to college football’s player of the year – since 2002, was the SEC-record holder with 1,986 rushing yards this year, breaking Herschel Walker’s 1981 mark, and equaled the most rushing touchdowns by an SEC back with 23. But Heismans are often won in November. The only exception was the Far West, where he finished second to McCaffrey. “It’s just a blessing and an honor”. Henry becomes the second Alabama player to win the Heisman, joining Mark Ingram, who won in 2009 over, yes, a Stanford tailback, Toby Gerhart. Henry joins Ingram and USC’s Reggie Bush (who was later forced to vacate the award) as the only running backs to win the Heisman since Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne in 1999.
He finished the season averaging an impressive 180.1 yards in Alabama’s games against ranked teams.
Henry finished with 1,832 total points in the final balloting, McCaffrey finished with 1,539 total points and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson finished with 1,165.
“I would say not anybody could represent the University of Alabama, our team, our program, in any more of a first-class way than what Derrick Henry has”, Alabama coach Nick Saban said.
“It’s not hard when you want the ball…when you want to make plays”, Henry answered when asked how hard it was to carry the ball as often as he has.
And he’ll have a chance for an early audition later this month when the No. 1 Tigers take on No. 4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl playoff semifinal in Miami on December 31.
Actually, it might have been the most pleasing evening of the running back’s college career, as winning the Heisman really is the top of the mountain when it comes to individual accomplishments.

‘I love you so much, ‘ he said during his speech. He ran for 189 yards and a touchdown on 44 carries in the Alabama’s Southeastern Conference championship game victory against Florida on Saturday.
