Derrick Henry Talks about the Heisman Trophy

Alabama’s Mark Ingram was the last running back – and only Crimson Tide player – to win the Heisman Trophy when he did so in 2009. He leads the FBS in all-purpose yards and broke Barry Sanders’ 27-year-old NCAA single-season record on Saturday by collecting 461 against No. 24 USC while leading Stanford to the Pac-12 title. The first such edition, on November 16, depicted Watson running the ball during Clemson’s 23-13 win over Florida State to clinch the ACC Atlantic Division.

McCaffrey, a sophomore, gained more national attention the second half of the season.

Clemson sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson has been named one of three finalists for the 2015 Heisman Trophy.

If you’re using which of the Heisman finalists played against the best defenses as a tiebreaker, McCaffrey gets left in the dust, and Henry and Watson are in a virtual deadlock. He set Alabama records for touchdowns rushing and yards rushing in a season and he also toppled Georgia legend Herschel Walker’s SEC record of yards rushing in a season.

His signature “Heisman moment” came in early November when he won the duel of SEC running backs against LSU’s Leonard Fournette in romping for 210 yards and three TD’s on 38 carries against the Tigers. “Exactly a year later, he will be in NY as a Heisman finalist”.

Of course we have the many bowl games that will start on Saturday, Dec. 19, the College Football Playoffs and finally, to see who will win the Heisman Trophy this season. In 2013, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston clearly emerged as the best player in college football (on the best team) over the course of the season.

Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey runs for a first down against Cal in the first quarter of the Big Game at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015. McCaffrey has rushed for 1,847 yards in 13 games, an average of 142.1 yards per game. He’s run for 756 yards — he’s gone past 100 yards rushing in three of Clemson’s final four regular-season games —with another nine scores. Stanford, No. 6 in the CFP poll at 11-2 including 4-0 vs. ranked teams, plays one-loss Iowa in the Rose Bowl. If Henry had been stuffed, the Heisman race might be more uncertain, but the fact he kept pace with his breakout year likely means he’s still the favorite.

“The Heisman Trophy has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and the chance to go to NY as a finalist is incredible, but none of this would be possible without my coaches and teammates”, Henry said in a statement. However, running the football isn’t McCaffrey’s only contribution to the team. Christian McCaffrey is our guy, and he should win the Heisman.

“I am so happy for Deshaun Watson”.

McCaffrey is also fifth in the nation in rushing (142.1 yards per game) and leads Stanford in receptions (41).
