Desert under flash flood watch Monday, Tuesday

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely to drench parts of Riverside County on Monday, including the Coachella Valley, creating a risk for risky flash flooding, forecasters said. “The heavy precipitation threat will remain over the region through Tuesday afternoon”.

Rainfall in excess of an inch is expected in the deserts and the inland valleys, with more than two inches hitting the mountains.

Tropical Storm Malia is 1,035 miles west northwest of Kailua-Kona.

High temperatures will be 92 to 97 degrees. Periods of heavy rain are also possible, mainly over Maui county and the Big Island.

Areas where wildfires have recently been are especially susceptible to flash floods and debris flows.

“A flash flood watch means that flooding of washes, creeks and other drainage areas is possible within the watch area”, the NWS released in a statement.

Although the coast was not included under the watch, forecasters predicted a chance of showers and thunderstorms this morning and a slight chance for rain this afternoon.

Forecasters advised residents with outdoor plans or who live near a flood-prone area to “be alert to rapidly changing weather conditions”. A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef to Lisianski Island.

Thursday is expected to return to typical conditions for the season.
