Despite Jinnah’s popularity, Kashmiris sided with Sheikh, acceded to India: Mufti

“These people come to power by hoodwinking people and putting slogans like autonomy, self rule, resolution of Jammu Kashmir, human rights and so on before the people during elections but as soon as elections are over all these politicians play the role of stooges and agents of Indian state”, said Malik.

He said, “They (communal forces) are hell bent to divide the Jammu Kashmir and the irony is ruling regime is encouraging them and not taking any action against these forces, under whom a conspiracy is being hatched to divert the attention of movement”.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah moved the resolution for communal harmony and antiextremism, which was supported by Sayeed and later passed by the house.

Referring to yesterday’s assault on Rashid by BJP members, he said the incident was not the real face of the Jammu and Kashmir. It reasserted the need for strengthening further the bonds of brotherhood and fortify the values that, it said, have distinguished J&K in the entire subcontinent in the most trying circumstances.

“Despite Jinnah sahib’s popularity, Kashmiris sided with Sheikh in his mission of religious tolerance and secularism”, Sayeed said.

“We in J&K, in tune with our own cultural diversity, have been an epitome of multiculturalism that has given space to people holding different shades of opinion in all the three regions”, he said while describing the transition of Muslim Conference into National Conference in 1938 as the turning point in the State’s history.

Kashmir had to act as a model of secularism, he said.

Days after he expressed concern over the Dadri lynching, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed reminded his BJP ally on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had secured votes “in the name of development”, and India “cannot survive if this atmosphere of hatred remains”.
