A police shut down at Mall of America didn’t stop hundreds of protesters from taking to Minneapolis’ airports, bus terminals and more, Yahoo News reports.
Four protesters were cited for trespass, disorderly conduct or both after arrests at the Mall of America but details on them weren’t available.
Police say that Clark had assaulted his girlfriend and was attacking the medical staff, and was reaching for an officer’s pistol when he was shot. Dayton says protesters’ call for the release of video footage of the Clark altercation has to wait, so it doesn’t jeopardize the integrity of the investigation that he says everyone wants. “Public officials can decide to allow protests on freeways, on train tracks and even in front of police stations, but they must draw the line at safeguarding private spaces”, the Star-Tribune editors wrote, noting that the highest courts in Minnesota and the United States have decisively ruled that shopping malls were not a public space, regardless of any public financing they might receive. A siren announced that the mall was closed and instructed shoppers to “seek shelter”, prompting many stores to close their gates. At least two protesters were arrested near Terminal 2.
The protesters gathered in Mall of America’s central rotunda on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and then abruptly walked outside.
“Their cause is unrelated to the Mall of America”.
The protest took place despite the mall’s attempts to get a court order to block it. A judge said she lacked the power to prevent Black Lives Matter from protesting as a group, or the ban individuals not associated with the group from joining the demonstration on their own. “Because we will drag you out of that office for justice”.
“We are a leader-full organization”, Kandace Montgomery, one of the organizers barred by the judge’s order, told the Associated Press.
Police said it was an “unauthorised demonstration” and at one point described the situation as “very, very dangerous”. Paul International Airport. “Significant traffic backups” were caused as a result of the protests, the airport said.
“When you disrupt their flow of capital… they actually start paying attention”, she said.
Organizers of the protest say that the demonstration inside the nation’s largest mall was a diversion to distract from a pending protest at Minneapolis-St.

The mall issued warnings that “this demonstration is not authorized” and that “those who fail to leave the property immediately will be subject to arrest” before police began escorting people out of the building. “That’s the only way that they’ll hear us”.
