Details emerge on Antioch theater attack suspect

Police originally identified the suspect as a 51-year-old man, but Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson clarified his age at a Wednesday evening press conference.

John Devino, director of operations at Global Security Services, which provides security to movie theaters, said he has “a feeling that insurance is going to start to mandate that theaters have security there”.

Aaron says an officer came into the theater and was fired upon by the suspect. Aaron said Montano raised his weapon and pulled the trigger. It also happened while jurors in Colorado decide whether the man who killed 12 and injured 70 others during a theater shooting in 2012 should receive the death penalty. Police, responding to the incident, shot Montano as he tried to escape out the back door.

Aaron told the media that police believed that the threat had ended with the gunman’s death.

Investigators also say the gunman was carrying two backpacks, which they are investigating.

The suspect had two bags – a backpack and a satchel – with him, Aaron said.

A backpack strapped to his chest was later detonated.

The wounded man had a superficial injury to his arm, fire department spokesman Brian Haas said.

Montano moved to Tennessee with his mother and sister from Illinois. It lists his address as “homeless”.

Montano had been committed for mental health issues four times, Mr Aaron said, adding he was arrested for assault and resisting arrest in 2004 near Nashville.

Vincente Montano, 29, lived on Briarbend Drive in Murfreesboro. None of the victims was taken to hospital. He thanked Metro police for their quick response.

Few movie theaters use metal detectors, and security experts say that exhibitors have been resistant not just for the cost, but for the message it may send to patrons seeking a comfortable, entertaining experience. He was identified only as Steven, Aaron said, because he did not want to bring any more attention to his family.

The suspect, who was wearing a surgical mask, reportedly began attacking people in the theater during a showing of “Mad Max: Fury Road”.

WTVF reports authorities said two women and a man were doused in the face with pepper spray by the suspect. The officer started at the projection room and started clearing down. Police shot and killed a man wielding a hatchet and an air soft pistol.

“There was dust flying everywhere”, plumber Sean Oliver said.

“You see officers going to the back”.

Nashville authorities said the outcome of yesterday’s theatre shooting could have been much worse.

Jeremy Cardoza, who works at Ford Ice Center nearby, said the business was on lockdown and no one was allowed in or to leave.

The most recent movie theater shooting in Nashville has raised questions regarding theater safety all across the nation. The shooter killed two and injured eight before killing himself on July 23.
