Detroit Lions beat Saints in New Orleans

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston (12) scores a touchdown reception on Detroit Lions cornerback Nevin Lawson (24) in the second half of an NFL football game in New Orleans, Monday, Dec. 21, 2015. He muffed a kickoff catch and lost a fumble in the fourth quarter deep in Lions territory that led to a Saints TD that cut the Lions’ lead to 28-20 with 10:06 left. With Stafford’s three scoring passes, all in the first half, the Saints have allowed 39 passing touchdowns in 14 games, worst in the NFL. He has caught seven of his eight touchdown passes in his last seven games. “We rallied around that”.

One prominent post showed his smiling face under the headline: “Happy Friday!” followed by “Wait, sorry, it’s Monday”. Despite the giant mess that was the 2015 Miss Universe pageant , Miss Colombia still came out looking like a victor .

New Orleans marched from its 27-yard line to the Detroit 29, and Brees completed a 28-yard pass to Brandin Cooks (10 catches, 124 yards) that initially was ruled a touchdown with 57 seconds left, but was reviewed and ruled down by contact at the 1. Brees looked hobbled for a period in the second quarter after suffering a right foot injury. Brees will have an MRI on Tuesday.

Detroit led 21-3 at halftime and then scored on the first series of the second half on running back Ameer Abdullah’s 15-yard run around left end to cap a six-play, 78-yard drive. He completed 22 of 25 passes for 254 yards and three TDs. “It is very hard to do that versus air”. So Eric Ebron and Lance Moore accepted it. The two Detroit Lions expect they’ll be fined by the NFL. “But I’m proud of the way our team fought down the stretch”.

But Abdullah fumbled on Detroit’s next play from scrimmage, and the Saints capitalized with Brees’ 11-yard scoring strike to Colston.

“So we knew we were going to have to make them pay with other guys and we were able to”. “You’re going to have losing seasons; everybody does”.

It was an all-around effort led by Matthew Stafford, an efficient run game and a defense that wasn’t flawless but came up huge when needed against Brees and the Saints offense.

Just after the two-minute warning, Saints tight end BENJAMIN WATSON (6 catches for 49 yards and 1 score) snagged his fifth touchdown of the season, when he laid his hands on a Brees pass near the right sideline that the tight end took into the end zone for a 1 yard score.

Another apparent New Orleans touchdown by running back Tim Hightower was waved off because tackle Senio Kelemete, inserted for extra goal-line blocking, failed to report as an eligible receiver.

“Tough scenario there at the end of the first half where you feel like you have a touchdown”, Brees said. “He was in for the prior play and the explanation I got was he never reported”.
