DETROIT (AP) – A Detroit police officer died Saturday, five days after he was shot at a gas station while chasing a crime suspect.

Marquise Cromer, 25, of Detroit, was charged with murder on Monday in Steil’s death.

Cromer is expected to be arraigned on the new charges at a probable cause conference scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday before 36th District Court Judge Deborah Langston.

Prosecutor Worthy said in a press release that, “The entire staff of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office mourn the death of Sgt. Kenneth Steil and send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow law enforcement colleagues”.

A blood clot developed and killed Steil, Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt said.

It’s expected Cromer will face new charges resulting from Steil’s death.

Sgt. Ken Steil “was a leader who believed in leading from the front”. Police say he resisted arrest.

Craig said more than 150 officers visited Steil while he was at St. John Hospital recovering last week.

“I had the opportunity to meet him, we prayed, I met with his family and his spirits were up”, said Williams.
