Police searched a house next to victim’s home early Tuesday, Greenwood reports, and found evidence related to the murder. They released an image of an unidentified suspect in the homicide investigation.
The van was the only possession that was stolen and according to the police it, as well as a suspect, were caught on tape at a local gas station shortly after the crime.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said someone had attacked Monchnik during a burglary. “However, in order for the suspect to cover his tracks, he chose to leave the location, obtain some gasoline, return and set the victim and the home on fire”.
Police on Monday morning released a photo and video of the suspect taken from surveillance footage at the gas station. He has a medium complexion and was wearing a red or orange skull cap, gray hoodie and black trousers.
Family members received a call from neighbors about the fire, said Scott Monchnik, the man’s son.
Police are looking for this suspect. Scott Monchnik had spoken with his father on Sunday and was told the keys to the van were missing.

The News and WWJ-AM, citing family members, identify the man as Paul Monchnik. He’s survived by three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren he had recently met face-to-face for the first time.
