Detroit Veterans Day Parade is November 7

Gary Byrd, a retired Air Force veteran, could be seen in the parade collecting pieces of candy with his 3 year old grandson Jason. Though at the University of Connecticut, retired lieutenant colonel Kristopher Perry is lending a hand to veterans.

While his grandson did seem to be having fun Byrd said he might be too young to fully realize the scope of what Veteran’s Day really means. The oasis is in the heart of the student union. “This is exactly why Veterans Day and Memorial Day are very special to me as a veteran – because of the sacrifice veterans made and the price we were prepared to give”.

Just prior to the parade, there will be a Remembrance Ceremony at the Colorado Veteran Monument at Civic Center Park.

“It really is a sense of pride and honor to go out and be part of it”, Perry said.

Perry will represent roughly 1,500 servicemen and women at the UConn campus.
