‘Devastated’ Newcastle apologise to fans following relegation

Sportsmail can reveal that the Spaniard has had a change of heart in the past 48 hours having previously accepted that he would part company with the club should they go down.

Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League for the second time in seven seasons.

MANAGING director Lee Charnley insisted “the process of scrutinising” has already begun after the club were relegated from the Premier League. Sunderland showed their resilience and fighting spirit when they came from behind twice to secure the all-important victory through an impeccable Jermain Defoe strike.

“We didn’t really get momentum in the game”.

If so, Newcastle would have to beat Spurs on Sunday and rely on Watford getting a result against Sunderland at Vicarage Road.

In a transparent attempt to head off any protests, Ashley has tried to use Rafa Benitez as a shield, talking of after the season has ended (and Rafa has been sent on his way?), the club/Ashley will “communicate more fully with supporters”.

Sunderland’s win over Everton last night confirmed that the Magpies would drop down a level, and Quinn was scathing when assessing the reasons behind the relegation.

There is a lot still to play for on Humberside however, as Hull take on Derby County in the playoff semi-final this weekend. Teams are still fighting for European Qualification as well as survival, so the last day of the season is set to have a dramatic feel to it.

“To go through the threat of relegation last season and then to suffer a worse fate this time around has been very hard for them”. Although the match against Tottenham could prove to be another problem for Benitez as Mauricio Pochettino will be keen on finishing the season on a high note.

Benitez’s future is now the subject of intense speculation and Newcastle – who bounced straight back up as champions following their previous relegation in 2008-09 – released a statement via Charnley shortly afterwards, apologising to their fans.
