The device exploded in a garbage can at approximately 9:35 a.m. ET along the route of a scheduled Semper Five race, which honors US marines and sailors, the prosecutor’s office said.
Following the blast, authorities immediately canceled the race and the area was put on lockdown.
The Semper Five charity run was organised to benefit military veterans and the families of those lost in military service.
The pipe bomb was in a garbage can.
A four-block area was evacuated as law-enforcement swept the site for more explosive devices, but none aside from those in the one garbage can were found, Della Fave said.
Police rushed to the scene, immediately evacuating about 30 homes located around the epicenter of the blast.
A barbecue festival in Seaside Heights was going on as planned, but the mayor of Point Pleasant chose to cancel a seafood festival because of the day’s events, Della Fave said.
A bomb has exploded in Seaside Park in New Jersey before planned 5km race, a prosecutor and local media said Saturday, Sputnik International reported.
A Marine charity race was scheduled to begin early today, but was delayed.
The FBI and US Department of Homeland Security are investigating after a small pipe bomb exploded in a little bin in New Jersey.
A shorter “fun run” event for youth runners had also just ended when the blast occurred. Local law enforcement are now working with the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Department of Homeland Security to ensure that the area near this incident is safe, evidence is collected, and any possible suspects are apprehended. “We will not rest until we find the person or persons responsible”.
It is not clear when the boardwalk and beach will reopen.
The explosion occurred five minutes after the 5 km race was originally scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
