Diamondbacks 6, Reds 3 – Holmberg rocked early as Cincinnati drops 7th straight

He could conceivably have had seven shutout innings if the defense had played its part as we know they can: Inciarte misplayed a ball in left field which led to the first run scoring for the Reds in the sixth, and a throw home from Tomas to Castillo in the seventh should have got the runner, but for the most awesome bit of Matrix-style avoidance I’ve seen at home-plate.

After using five relief pitchers on Thursday, the Arizona Diamondbacks were hoping that Rubby De La Rosa could go deep into Friday’s game.

Diamondbacks: RHP Chase Anderson (5-5, 4.51), optioned to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday before getting a reprieve and being recalled on Thursday when right-hander Jeremy Hellickson was placed on the 15-day disabled list, starts Sunday’s four-game series finale. Pollock followed his back-to-back, four-hit games by going 3 for 5 and scoring two runs.

Joey Votto hit his 23rd homer in the eighth inning off of Keith Hessler for the Reds.

Josh Collmenter retired all nine batters he faced and Andrew Chafin, David Hernandez (1-3) and Daniel Hudson each turned in a scoreless inning before Brad Ziegler pitched the ninth for his 22nd save. At 93 pitches, he could have gone out for the eighth, but Chip Hale opted to go to the bullpen instead. “He did some mechanical stuff with (hitting coach) Turner (Ward) the past couple of days”.

Zach Godley (4-0) allowed a run in 3 2/3 innings to pick up the victory. “I just want to finish the season strong”. “He was erratic. He was making what I call empty pitches”. He’s a horse. He’s got the ability to throw a hundred pitches.

The Cincinnati Reds continued their struggles this season as they lost to the Diamondbacks on Friday. De La Rosa is 3-4 with a 4.66 ERA in 12 road outings this season.Holmberg served up three homers as he was torched for seven runs in two-plus innings of a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. That pattern changed, for the better, in the fourth, as Arizona scored four runs on five hits and a Goldschmidt plunking [Boooooo!].
