Diamondbacks activate ace Greinke from DL
Homers by Drury and Paul Goldschmidt in the sixth inning gave the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead before a two-run homer by Neil Walker in the bottom of the sixth put the Mets ahead and left ace Zack Greinke, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day after missing five weeks with a left oblique injury, in danger of suffering the loss.

The Mets were in position to claim the game on Walker’s homer as Matz gutted through six innings of two-run ball while hurling a career-high 120 pitches.
Brandon Drury (second inning) and Goldschmidt (sixth inning) each homered and had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks.
The lefty had his swing-and-miss pitches Tuesday and it allowed him to tie his career-high with nine strikeouts, but homers once again burned him. The victory improved the Mets to 4-8 over their last 12 games, but home series against Arizona and San Diego this week and a three-game set at the Diamondbacks to begin next week give them their best chance to gain some ground on division rival Miami, which now holds the second NL wild card spot. The Mets will try to bounce back from a tough defeat and keep their chances of a series win alive when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of a three-game set on Wednesday.New York held a 3-2 lead in Tuesday’s series opener but allowed three runs in the seventh inning and went on to suffer a 5-3 loss. Three of his last four homers have given the Mets the lead.
The dagger by Arizona (46-66) was a go-ahead, two-run triple from Michael Bourn, who was very close to being a Met in 2013, ultimately signing with Cleveland as a free agent as the Mets feared potentially losing its first-round draft pick as a result of signing Bourn.
“Today is about as good as it gets”, he told the Associated Press. “Just didn’t get it done”. I was hoping to throw it exactly where it was.
“It’s kind of like it’s been one step forward and two steps back for us”, Walker said. Teams that are kind of out of it can be risky. “Just like these guys, they’re all kind of fighting for jobs next year”, he said. “April and May are months where if you don’t play great you can make up for it in June, July, August and September”. I haven’t been on a team that’s made the playoffs that hasn’t been good in August. After a walk to Michael Conforto, Collins pinch hit Ty Kelly for Travis d’Arnaud, admitting the difficulty in doing the move but acknowledging Kelly works counts and he was trying to get the tying run aboard. They also had a chance to win consecutive games for the first time since July 6-7. Those are two things that should have brightened the New York Mets’ horizon on Tuesday night, yet still it remains dark around the edges.
Matz is winless in his last seven starts at Citi Field. He has won just once in his last 13 starts.

Walker went 3-for-4 and is 26-for-53 (.491) with eight extra-base hits, including four home runs, and 11 RBIs in his last 13 games.
