Brandon Drury singled home Paul Goldschmidt in the 12th inning to give the Diamondbacks a 10-9 walk-off win over the Dodgers, spoiling what was a comeback from down six runs earlier in the game.
The game stayed tied as Ross Stripling came out of the bullpen as the Dodgers’ ninth pitcher in the game.
It was Drury’s third game-ending RBI since mid-July. He has three leadoff homers in the past five games and 17 on the season. Don’t expect him to last in the game, though, as Clemens has only pitched into the sixth inning once this season. Those rookies are 5-1 with two no-decisions and a combined 2.76 ERA in those games. The Dodgers’ lead in the NL West remained four games over second-place San Francisco.
The Dodgers return home on Sunday night, and host the Giants in a showdown series beginning tomorrow at Dodger Stadium.
Goldschmidt stretched a base hit into a double with two outs before Lamb’s walk.
“A credit to Goldschmidt”. “Oh for 5 and he’s still running out singles up the middle and he turns it into a double. Kind of just had one bad inning and it kind of got carried away there. tough outing”. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner had established career highs in games (138), runs (70), hits (137), doubles (31), home runs (27), RBIs (84) and walks (44).
The Japanese right-hander collected himself, inducing Mitch Hangier to ground into a fielder’s choice to third for the only Arizona run as he got the victory on just three hits, with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings.
Reliever Joe Blanton walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, but got pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks Jr.to hit into a force play to end the inning.
Both teams had two runners on base in the ninth but couldn’t deliver. Adrian Gonzalez scored from second base on a force when Segura’s throw to first for a double play got past Goldschmidt for an error. His last start came at Colorado on August 31, when he gave up five runs on six hits and three walks over three innings.
It is not to say he is the most talented, just the one who has been able to take the mound every time he has been asked and to offer consistency like no other.
Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chris Owings (16) is congratulated by teammate Yasmany Tomas following his … He has 12 strikeouts and two walks in his first two starts. Turner scored on a passed ball by Welington Castillo.Maeda lost track of the strike zone in the second inning, walking two.
Rookies started four consecutive games September 4-7 at home, with Jose De Leon, Maeda, Ross Stripling and Stewart each winning the games. De Leon, a rookie who’d won his first two starts, gave up seven hits. Arizona’s loss halted a four-game winning streak, but the hot-hitting Jean Segura continued his stellar play by going 2-for-5.
The Diamondbacks are parting with senior vice president of baseball operations De Jon Watson, and chief baseball officer Tony La Russa said he and general manager Dave Stewart may also be fired after the season.
Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (11-3, 1.81) gets the start against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner on Monday night in Los Angeles, the start of a key series between the two rivals.
La Russa announced Watson’s departure and said he will meet with owner Ken Kendrick and president and CEO Derrick Hall eventually about his status. “It’s going to be nice to get in front of 40,000 people who are cheering for you”.
