Diamondbacks sign Zack Greinke to 6-year deal

The bad news is that with Greinke, Arizona already has the pitcher each team wanted and needed. This deal gives the right-hander an average salary of $34.4 million, making him the highest-paid player in Major League Baseball history when he takes the mound in 2016.

Johnny Cueto, who was a member of the World Series champion Kansas City Royals, is considered the most coveted remaining free-agent pitcher on the market.

Leake, 28, is still of interest to the Diamondbacks even after signing Greinke, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

ESPN is reporting that the deal is worth a total of $206 million, while Jon Heyman at CBS Sports reports that there is $60 million in deferred money, making the value around $190 million.

MIAMI – Steroids-tainted home run king Barry Bonds is returning to baseball full time as hitting coach for the Miami Marlins.

“I think I was just saving all my postseason wins for the Red Sox”, Price said on Friday during his introductory news conference in a Fenway Park function room filled with championship memorabilia.

In spite of forecasts his personality might be ill-suited for a large-market franchise, Greinke shined in three seasons with the Dodgers, for whom he was 51-15 with a 2.30 ERA.

The Marlins need hitting advice. They finished next to last in the majors in runs in 2015, when they went 71-91.

A little over 10years later, Greinke has, like a salmon, returned to the scene of his first dinger. Miami hired Juan Nieves as pitching coach and Lorenzo Bundy as outfield-base running coach.

Los Angeles president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman released a statement Friday to wish Greinke’s family the best.

The front office then completed the deal in less than 12 hours.

While there is no replacing Greinke, the Dodgers are believed, according to Jim Bowden, to be closing in on a contract with former Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, who has put some solid seasons with the Mariners and can fill in nicely in the three slot, or if the Dodgers don’t acquire a co-ace to pair with Kershaw, can serve as a decent number two.

Fox Sports was the first to report the deal.

Lackey pitched the clinching game for the Los Angeles Angels in the 2002 World Series and for the Red Sox in the 2013 Series. With Greinke off the board, it’s a safe bet that they’ll reach out to Leake’s agent. That they bested the Dodgers and Giants for the 2015 Cy Young Award runner-up qualifies as one of the biggest free-agent upsets ever.

Napout, from Paraguay, and Hawit, from Honduras, are resisting extradition to the US while being detained in Zurich-area jails. The Dodgers want to move on from the Andre Ethiers, Carl Crawford and old deals that helped bloat their payroll and into a position where their young pipeline – from outfielder Joc Pederson to shortstop Corey Seager – defines them much more.

The Diamondbacks clearly overpaid the 32-year-old Greinke in isolation, but given that all reports had Greinke staying in the division, some of that overpay may prove to be worth it for the blow struck against the Dodgers and Giants.
