Diane James elected the new leader of Ukip
Outgoing deputy leader Paul Nuttall said the party has been plagued by squabbling and division which has left it resembling “a jigsaw that has been emptied on to the floor”.

Farage also pledged to continue to lead Ukip’s MEPs in the European Parliament.
“What I want to see happen politically in Britain, UKIP are no longer the party that is going to do that”, Phillips said.
Speaking after being elected as the new leader of UKIP on Friday, at the party’s annual conference in Bournemouth, she told journalists that “the jury is still out” on Trump, but that it was “for the American people to decide”.
Speaking at Ukips annual conference in Bournemouth, Farage described Britain voting to leave the European Union – which he said was the culmination of his lifes work – felt like a fairy-tale that had come true. It’s gonna take me while to get back down to Earth.
Led by the charismatic Mr Farage, who successfully tapped into a powerful anti-establishment mood among voters, the party won almost four million votes at a general election in 2015 and played a key role in persuading Britons to vote to leave the EU. ‘I literally couldn’t have worked any harder, or couldn’t have been more determined – it’s been my life’s work to get to this point.
Also vanished is a 35-minute slot for Ms James’ four leadership rivals to give a speech after their loss. “I think, folks, I’ve done my bit”.
James (middle) waits for the result of the UKIP leadership election. There are so many factions in Ukip it becomes a Venn diagram, almost, where my enemy’s enemy is my friend.
He said he would remain active in political life, with plans to travel across Europe to meet similar political movements, but would not seek to influence the new UKIP leader.
“It is now run and managed by a National Executive Committee made up of people who’ve got very little experience of politics”, he said.
“I had a very good feel for why the U.S. model is quite frankly failing and the pitfalls that are there if the United Kingdom doesn’t get it right”, she told local newspaper the Southern Daily Echo in 2013.
The contenders are former Hartlepool parliamentary candidate Philip Broughton, Cambridgeshire town and district councillor Lisa Duffy, MEP for the West Midlands and Dudley councillor Bill Etheridge, former businesswomen and healthcare professional Diane James and deputy chair of UKIP’s London Lambeth branch Elizabeth Jones.
The ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) said all candidates must have been a member of the party for at least five years.
And she said the party needs to change and become more professionalised to become “a winning political machine”.

In return, Mr Carswell pledged his “110 per cent” support for the new leader.
