Leonardo DiCaprio attends the amfAR ‘s 23rd Cinema Against AIDS Gala at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on May 19, 2016 in Cap d’Antibes, France. The famous actor announced yesterday that the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation is giving this money to help with conservation and environmental programmes to help climate change.
In what is bound to go down as one of the largest portfolio of environmental grants by a private foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) has announced grants of whopping $15.6 million (Rs 104.4 crore).
Additionally, after a period of increased grantmaking and a goal of expanding its global impact, the foundation warmly welcomes veteran environmental leader Terry Tamminen as CEO. He previously served as Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and is a prominent figure in the environmental movement.
In February, while accepting his Best Actor Oscar for The Revenant, DiCaprio implored action on climate change, pointing out that the film’s primary message was “about man’s relationship to the natural world”.
Leo DiCaprio’s foundation is donating $15.6 million to help solve issues with the environment. Since 1998, the foundation has reportedly granted $59 million to various organisations for a slew of conservation projects across the world – ranging from saving species like sharks, tigers and elephants to protecting indigenous tribes and communities. The four key areas that concern DiCaprio are: climate change, wild lands conservation, oceans conservation and protecting the biodiversity of the Earth.
