The financially strapped city was under the control of a state-appointed emergency manager when it switched its source of tap water to the nearby Flint River in April 2014 from Detroit’s system to save money.
National Guard soldiers have joined Michigan State Police, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services employees in ramped-up distribution efforts in the city of Flint. The National Guard was called in this week to help deliver bottled water and filters door to door in Flint.
The fallout from the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, continues as Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder asked for increased federal help to combat lead contamination in the municipal water supply and Michigan’s attorney general announced today he would launch an investigation into the matter.
Federal officials are now investigating whether an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease there has been caused by the drinking water, and the state has been forced to haul in bottled water for citizens to drink.
The Attorney General’s office says they will be checking if any MI laws were violated during the state’s handling of the crisis.
On Tuesday, Weaver told Sirius XM’s “Sandyland with Sandra Bernhard” radio show that she lobbied the Republican governor for the restoration of her powers.
For more than a year, water drawn from the Flint River leached lead from old pipes into homes after the city switched its drinking water.
Schuette promises his investigation will proceed “without fear or favor”. Exposure to lead can cause behavior problems and learning disabilities in children.
Snyder has declared an emergency in Flint because of lead in water.
Kildee said in a statement that “thousands of children of Flint who have been poisoned are the victims in this situation”.
FEMA has received Snyder’s request and is reviewing it “as expeditiously as possible”, spokesman Rafael Lemaitre said Friday morning on Twitter.
