Did Miss Philippines Show A Major Character Flaw Last Night?
From President Juan Manuel Santos to Miss Colombia’s relatives in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla, millions of Colombians who tuned in for Sunday’s pageant screamed joyously when it was announced that Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo had won this year’s crown.

Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (right) joins Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez onstage after Gutiérrez was initially crowned the victor at the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas Sunday night. But when the pageant’s host, Steve Harvey, announced that he’d made a mistake and that the honor belonged to the Philippines, the mood turned into that of a jilted prom queen.
The beauty pageant ended Sunday night with the contestant from Colombia having the crown removed from her head and placed on the contestant from the Philippines after Harvey mistakenly read that she had won when really she was the first runner-up. “Majority went over to Miss Colombia, because they knew her heart was breaking”.
The woman who helped coach Southard to success was also at a loss for words, when she watched the pageant from her living room in Mount Holly.
A quick turnaround saw the crown being popped onto contestant Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s head while Steve hung his head in shame.
Steve Harvey is reportedly extremely embarrassed by his Miss Universe 2015 blunder, according to Hollywood Life. “To get crowned Ms. Universe and for them to take away the crown, I feel so sorry for her (Gutierrez)”. “Miss Universe 2016!!!! What pride!” “The photos are there to prove it. To me, as a Colombian, she is still Miss Universe”. “I decided that maybe it was bad timing to do it now”, she said.
“Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play”.
“I was watching Miss Universe with my family”.
Wurtzbach told ET that she saw Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, crying backstage as a group of girls comforted her, but that she has not spoken to Gutierrez about the mishap yet. He softened his tone later that morning in an interview on NBC’s Today Show, calling Harvey a “great guy” who handled it well. Was Steve Harvey announcing the wrong victor rigged?
British TV host Piers Morgan said the gaffe was “cruel and unforgivable”, even given the “dangerous world” of live television.
NBCUniversal and Trump co-owned the Miss Universe Organization until earlier this year.
